Habang sila'y nag-uusap tungkol sa teaching load nila next semester, ako'y nag-iisip kung papaano ko bibitbitin ang mga gamit ko pababa sa Manila.

Yes, i'm leaving Baguio.

Kailangan ko ng direksyon sa buhay. Kung mananatili ako dito, malaki ang posibilidad na paaalisin din ako pagkalipas ng ilan pang taon dahil sa hindi ko natapos na graduate studies ko. Kailangan ko na ring tapusin ang MA ko dahil nahuhuli na ako sa biyahe. Huling semestre na ng palugit na ibinigay sa akin para tapusin ang graduate studies ko.

Maraming rason sa aking pagbaba pero malungkot ako. Napamahal na ako sa Baguio at gusto ko na rito. Dito hindi pinagpapawisan ang paa at kamay ko. Dito, kaya lakarin ang SM, ang palengke, ang school mula sa bahay. Dito, mura ang gulay. Dito maganda ang apartment namin. Dito, maganda ang buhay.

Bukod sa lahat ng ito, ayokong iwan ang mga taong napamahal na sa akin. Gusto ko pa silang makasama. 'Yung mas matagal pa. Gusto ko pa ring magturo. Gusto ko pang mangulit sa mga estudyante ko. Marami pa akong gustong gawin dito.

Pero kailangan ko munang iwanan ang lahat ng ito, kahit isipin ko na lang na pansamantala. Dahil kung hindi ako ngayon kakabig, baka tuluyan na akong hindi makabalik dito.

Kaya sa lahat ng nakasama ko, sa lahat ng nakasalamuha ko, sa lahat ng napamahal na sa puso ko, mamimiss ko kayo. At hindi ako magsasawang alalahanin ang dalawang taong ating pinagsamahan, kahit saan pa ako dalhin ng aking mga paa.

My Roommate's Best Friend

Dumating siya sa buhay ko sa hindi inaaasang pagkakataon. Hindi ko pa rin nga maintindihan kung bakit ba kami naging magkaibigan samantalang halos magkaiba ang mga ugali namin. Madalas akong mapikon sa kanya dahil mahilig siyang mamikon. Ang galing-galing niyang mamilosopo. Ang totoo, magaling lang talaga siyang lumusot at magpalusot. Lagi siyang may dahilan sa lahat ng bagay. Akala ko noon, hindi niya ako mahal. Pero sa kanyang sariling paraan, at kahit hindi niya sabihin, alam ko mahal niya ako... bilang kaibigan.

Hindi ko pwedeng makalimutan ang unang beses na nakita ko siya. Aplikante ako noon sa isang org sa UP, 2nd year college ako at ang tindi ng pagkamahiyain. Lagi akong nakayuko, bibihirang magsalita at ngumiti. Ilap ako sa mga tao noon, lalo na sa mga bagong kakilala. Dumating siya at nangulit sa mga taong kakilala niya, maging sa mga bagong mukha. Nang ipinakilala kami, ayun, nginitian naman niya ako. Pero hindi doon nagsimula ang pagkakaibigan namin. Lumipas pa ang isang taon bago ko talaga siya nakilala nang lubusan. Kung hindi pa dahil sa pagiging “autistic” niya, baka hindi na talaga kami naging friends.

Hindi ko pa rin naiintindihan ngayon kung ano talaga ang problema niya nung araw na 'yun e, pero pinili kong samahan siya kahit hindi naman niya talaga ipinapaliwanag sa akin ang dahilan ng madalas niyang paglayas sa tambayan, madalas na pag-iisa at madalas na pag-space-out. Pagkatapos noon, nagpapalitan na kami ng sulat: mahaba, maiksi, may kuwenta, walang kuwenta, kahit anong gusto naming sabihin at sulatin. Parang naging extension ng diary namin ang isa't isa. Madalas ring mag-asaran sa telepono, at mas madalas ako ang naaasar. Madalas din kaming tumatambay sa Ilang-Ilang, sa Vinzons Hill, sa Sunken. Madalas naming pagkuwentuhan ang mga bagay-bagay na sa totoo lang ay walang katuturan. At siyempre, hindi mawawala ang usapan namin tungkol sa mga problema namin sa pag-ibig.

May gusto siya noon na orgmate namin na kaklase din niya sa isang subject, pero hindi niya maligawan kasi nililigawan na nang barkada niya. Mga nakaw na sulyap na lang ang nagagawa niya, mga nakaw na sandali lalo na noong nagpunta sila sa Naga. Obviously, walang nangyari sa lovestory nila.

Nainlove ulit siya, sa isang orgmate ulit namin. This time, hindi na lang barkada niya ang karibal niya kundi pinsan na niya. Maling-mali ang mga nangyari dahil aksidente lamang ang pagkakakilala ng pinsan niya at ng taong gusto niya. Matagal-tagal din niyang ininda ang sakit pero wala pa rin siyang magawa dahil sa tingin niya e sagot na sa mga panalangin niya para sa pinsan niya ang nangyari.

Sa lahat nang ito, ginampanan ko ang papel ng isang mabuting kaibigan, tagapakinig sa lahat ng angas niya, sa lahat ng mga gusto niya sanang mangyari na hindi naman nangyari. Minsan tagapayo lang ako, minsan tagaasar lang. Binigyan ko pa nga siya ng “spaceship” para sa tuwing kakailanganin niya ng kausap, mas madali na siyang makapunta sa akin. Pero ang hindi niya alam, habang nag-e-emote siya sa pag-ibig na hindi maisukli sa kanya, ako'y katulad niyang nag-e-emote dahil alam kong hindi niya masusuklian ang pagtingin ko sa kanya. Hindi niya alam na sa lahat ng iyak na ibinubuhos ko balikat niya ay dahil sa kanya, na sa tuwing susulat ako sa kanya ay dahil namimiss ko siya, na sa tuwing gagamitin ko ang spaceship namin 'yun ay para magpapansin sa kanya. Pero dahil kaibigan niya lang ako, wala rin naman akong nagawa kundi magmasid sa isang tabi at siguraduhing okey siya. Minsan, naka-invisible mode pa nga e.

Nasanay na ako sa ganoong sitwasyon. Akala ko pagkatapos ng masaklap na pagkabigo niya sa pag-ibig ay makikita na niya ako sa ibang pananaw, pero mali pala ako. Na-inlove ulit siya sa isang “almost perfect” na girl. This time, medyo hindi na malinaw ang komunikasyon namin. Hindi ko na nga alam kung kelan ba siya nagsimulang manligaw dun sa girl e. Bigo pa rin siya na makuha ang pag-ibig ni “almost perfect girl”. At sa mga sandaling ito, hindi na ako ang dumadamay sa kanya. Hindi ko na rin napansin na may iba na pala siyang sinusulatan, na may iba nang nagko-comfort sa kanya, na may iba na siyang “bestfriend”, na hindi na gumagana ang spaceship na bigay ko sa kanya.

And the funny thing was, roommate ko 'yung bago niyang bestfriend.  Matagal bago ko nakita na bumaba na naman ang puwesto ko sa buhay niya. At nung makita ko silang magkasama, alam kong wala na akong magagawa. May nakita ako noon na hindi ko naman maexplain pero alam kong hinding-hindi ko na sila pwedeng paghiwalayin. Naging honest naman ang roommate ko sa akin tungkol sa nararamdaman niya. They became closer. And then they fell inlove.

May iba na rin akong gusto noong naging sila pero for some reasons na hindi ko maintindihan, nagkulong ako sa kuwarto for two days at nag-iniyak noong sinabi sa akin ng roommate ko na sila na. Sabi ko sa sarili ko noon, “bakit ako umiiyak, wala naman na akong gusto sa kanya.” Pero parang gusto ko lang iiyak ang mga luha na naimpid sa kung saang sulok ng aking alaala. Gusto ko lang din sigurong iiyak ang panghihinayang sa mga sulat niya na sinunog ko dahil sa sama ng loob, na sana hindi ko na lang sinunog para hanggang ngayon may natitira akong alaala noong ako pa ang madalas niyang sabihan ng mga naiisip niya. Siguro rin, pinakawalan ko na siya ng tuluyan at nagpapasalamat na magiging masaya na rin siya. Dahil kahit ilang beses na siya ang rason sa mga luha ko, hindi ko pwedeng itanggi na naging mabuti siyang kaibigan sa akin, na sa aming dalawa siya ang nagtabi ng sulatan namin, na masaya akong makita siyang masaya.

Noong 26th birthday ko, abay ako sa kasal nila.

Call for submissions for 100 Kwentong Peyups

As part of UP's 100th year celebration, we are putting together '100 Kwentong Peyups', a series of columns which will appear in PDI and Philippine Star throughout the year. We invite all past students of any of the University of the Philippines' units to submit their stories. Submissions should:

1. Be a maximum of 1,000 words
2. Be a personal experience and written in the 1st person
3. Emotionally engaging---funny, sad, scary, etc.
4. Make the connection between the story and a life lesson that serves you well today
5. If possible, please include an old photo/scanned memento

Please include your name, College or Unit and Course, and year you entered UP as well as your email address. If you remember your Student Number, even better.

First Trip for the Year: Sagada, Mt. Province

When a friend decided to visit you after 11 years of not seeing each other, what would you do, especially if you live in the North? Malamang, ipasyal sa pinakamagagandang lugar sa Norte, and undoubtedly, Sagada is one of the many places in the North that possesses serene beauty. Everyone's longing to visit Sagada. That's why I'm taking my friend there this January.

I've been there once. Maulan nga lang nung nagpunta kami last October. We even spent Amer's birthday there. Nag-caving kami sa Sumaging, nagbreakfast sa Yoghurt House, sumigaw sa Echo Valley. I even met Mam Irene and Sab-ay, na super bait. Super nice ng unang beses ng pagpunta ko sa Sagada kaya naman gusto ko ulit bumalik.

Noong sinabi ni Bernie na gusto niya ulit makapunta ng Baguio, naisip ko na dadalhin ko talaga siya sa Sagada, though malayo ang Sagada sa Baguio, para makapagrelax naman siya after ng heavy duties niya sa kanyang work, and of course para may mas maganda siyang memory ng pagbisita niya sa Norte (at kasama ako sa magandang memory na 'yun. Ahehehe...) Nang sinabi ko sa kanya ang plano, well, siyempre, excited and lolo mo! Hindi nga lang ako makapag-decide kung saang lugar sa Sagada kami pupunta.

Then today, i came across this site http://holyweek.tripod.com/info/sagada.htm at nandoon ang mga contact numbers and emails na kailangan ko to finally arrange our trip there. Tapos may bonus pang cute na map. O diba? Super nice!

Sana mag-enjoy kami at sana forever maging "Special Place" ang Sagada sa mga alaala namin. Kahit mag-asawa na siya, okay lang sa akin. Basta, ako pa rin ang unang nagdala sa kanya sa Sagada, ayos na 'yun. Ahehehe... :D

Last Year...

Super active ng 2007 para sa akin. Ang dami-dami kong pinaggagawa, hindi ko tuloy namalayan ang paglipas ng oras. Here's an outline of what happened last year sa magulong buhay ng bidang ako. :D

1. Medyo boring ang first quarter (January to March) ng 2007 sa akin. Wala masyadong nangyari. Busy sa pagtuturo, sa pagkikipaglandian sa mga natitirang crush na estudyante sa UPB, nasasanay sa pag-iisa sa bahay (Aurora Hill), natataranta sa mga maaaring mangyari sa career. Nahumaling din sa pagpo-poetry reading. Feb14, nagbasa ang BWG ng mga tula ng pag-ibig sa Cafe by the Ruins, at may binasa akong tula doon para kay Ping Medina, ang Buwan IX. Hindi ko alam kung nakarating sa kanya ang kopya ng tula kong iyon. Binasa rin ang dalawa kong tula sa play ng AMiCUS noong February. March, nagwala sa CAC Faculty Variety show at kumanta ng Zombie at Ode to my Family, deretso pangangarag dahil malapit na ang finals nun.

2. Second Quarter ng 2007 (April-June), medyo mas boring pala. Wala akong trabaho noong Summer 2007 so umuwi na lang ako sa Laguna, at rumaket buong bakasyon. At dumagdag ang sandamukal na bilbil sa katawan ko. Nagkita-kita rin pala kaming magkakaklase noong highschool last Holy week and we had fun, as usual. By June, balik Baguio pero medyo problemado sa trabaho due to some irritating facts. More Rizal nga pala itong semester na ito kasi 3 Rizal ang hinawakan ko noon. Plus may 7am class ako noon. Shet!!! 'Yun ang pinakamahirap na semester ko ever! But since, punong-puno pa rin ng blessings ang taong ito, God sent another blessing for me noong June. Arjay came to my Baguio Life (ahehehe... 'kala n'yo ha!) Nagsimula a rin siyang magturo sa Baguio at sobrang thankful ako kasi may kasama na ako sa bahay, may kakulitan, may kaaway kung minsan, may nagpaparealize sa akin na tao pala ako, at may sumusuporta sa akin, forever! ahehehe... (FYI lang po, Arjay's my friend for what, 7 years now, so wag kayong maano jan na asarin kaming dalawa dahil super friends po talaga kami. :D) Then may another blessing kasi nameet ko si Isko, isa pang friend na nagpadagdag ng kasiyahan sa malamig na Baguio.

3. Third Quarter (July-September) 2007. Of course, my 27th birthday na sinelebrate ko ulit sa Laguna since pinadala ako sa Unang Komperensiya ng Panitikang Pambata sa UP Diliman. Nag-uwian na rin sa Pilipinas ang iba kong friends. I remember this one stupid thing that I did. I was about to meet Teofy sa PHAN tapos may isang guy na kinuhit ko sa magkabilang tagiliran niya, akala ko si Teofy. But no! Hindi siya, ayun, napahiya ako. Ahehehe. Mas nakilala ko rin ang iba ko pang mga co-faculty, especially Amer, Dazzie, Marifi, Charz and Isko.

4. Last Quarter ng Taon, (October-December). Ang pinakamakabagbag damdamin sa lahat, punong-puno ng emosyon, pagkagulat, kasiyahan, frustrations, lahat na. Problema sa work dahil sa mga pesteng estudyante ng BALL, Rizal encounter again, CJW extension work sa Abra at Mt. Province, gimik sa Sagada and conquering the cave, simula ng maraming realization about Baguio, loving my friends more, having new friends, having numerous crushes all over the city/country, first reunion ng batch96 ng LSPC Highschool, at marami pang iba... At ang pinakaexciting sa lahat, na humabol pa talaga sa pagsasara ng taon, meeting Bernie again after 9 years. I don't care kung mabasa niya 'to o kung nabasa na niya yung mga past entries ko about him. Hindi ko naman kasi naisip na magkikita ulit kami, at magkakausap. And I'm loving every moment na nakakausap ko siya, lalo na kapag nakakasama. Sana lang magkaroon na ako ng lakas ng loob na sabihin sa kanya kung gaano siya kahalaga sa akin. At kahit hanggang pagkakaibigan lang ang lahat, masaya na rin ako. Pero siyempre, sana hindi lang hanggang doon. :D

2008 na. Hindi ko alam kung anong meron, pero I pray na sana mas marami pang blessings ang dumating. Medyo nakabitin pa rin ang buhay ko, at alam ko super pasaway ako last year pero sana maging mas matino na ako this year. Lord, another second chance, please! Thank you so much for all the blessings. I'm loving my life!

Thank you sa mga naging bahagi ng buhay ko, sa mga nagpasaya, sa mga nagpaluha (dahil mas nagiging strong ako), sa mga nang-aaway (bahala kayo sa buhay n'yo, masaya ako ngayon!) ahehehe, sa mga kaibigan kong walang sawang sumusuporta at nagsasabi ng mga bagay na kailangan kong marinig, I LOVE YOU ALL!!! Mwah! At syempre kay Bernie, thank you. Hope to spend more time with you, sana.

Sa Mama ko, tulad ng sabi ko kanina, I'm so blessed for having you as my mom, walang dull moments with you Ma, promise! Ingat po! :D

The Cancer Man

Hope he's not reading this blog, otherwise I'm dead. (Oh well, halos buong mundo naman ay alam ang aking paghanga sa tao na 'yun 'no. Damn!)

YOU AND CANCER MAN
